Episode 58: Everybody in this picture is dead

September 19, 2018

Akron just beat its first Big Ten team since 1894, which is probably before your grandparents were born. Buffalo's 3-0 since probably after your grandparents' births. We'll jump around and talk about all the nonsensical football things that happened in Week 3 and will sort of preview Week 4. NIU vs. FSU is going to be the burniest of barn burners!!!!!

Episode 57: Bro the boat

September 12, 2018

EMU is going to the Rose Bowl next year, as evidenced by its 20-19 win at Purdue in the most on-brand Big Ten weather game possible. There, that's it. That's the episode description. That's all you need to know. That's the only thing worth talking about anyway.

Episode 56: Punt, catch and score

September 4, 2018

Week 1 was quite the unusual child; what a way to get things started. Kent State was impressive for all the right reasons and NIU surprised for all the wrong reasons. There were plenty of blowouts over FCS teams, but Ohio vs. Howard wasn't one of them. Nathan Rourke got benched!

Now that this train is moving, our confidence in these team have changed a little bit, but we're going to have to see what we see in Week 2 before we change our minds too much about these teams.

Episode 55: Getting too deep about some two deeps

August 29, 2018

Football's finally back!

We've known what the Week 1 slate has looked like for a while, but now it's about time to actually get the season started. Plus, with teams publishing their opening depth charts and two-deeps, it's time to analyze and over-analyze a few notes.

Some things we asked ourselves: Who/what are we most wrong about? What's a game we're really looking forward to? Is Alex just being a hater on Akron's offense?

Episode 54: Northern Illinois season preview circa 2018

August 23, 2018

Northern Illinois — that one team that made it to the Orange Bowl a few years ago: it's still chugging along. Last year clearly didn't go the way the Huskies had hoped, but now it's entering the season as the favorites to win the West. With much of the offense returning and the defense still has an All-American at defensive end, it's easy to see why they're the popular pick.

Six questions we ask ourselves about NIU in the year of 2018:

  1. Where does Sutton Smith rank among your all-time favorite NIU players?
  2. How many points will NIU beat Iowa by?
  3. Is Marcus Childers the real deal?
  4. Who’s running the ball for the Huskies this year?
  5. How much does the loss of Juwaun Johnson hurt NIU’s defense?
  6. Can Andrew Gantz actually provide stability at kicker for the Huskies?

Episode 53: Buffalo season preview circa 2018

August 23, 2018

Buffalo could be as good as any team out of the MAC East to come away with a banner year and make it back to the MAC Championship game for the first time in 10 years. This year, specifically, will be the most-telling of Lance Leipold's time at Buffalo. Considering the talent on the roster, if he can't elevate this year's team past 6-6, will he ever be able to?

Six questions we ask ourselves about Buffalo in the year of 2018:

  1. Is Tyree Jackson elite?
  2. Drew Anderson played out of his mind last year in place of Tyree for a few games.  He’s gone now, and can Kyle Vantrease provide the same spark if Tyree goes down again?
  3. What sort of improvements need to be made on the rush offense?
  4. How much depth behind Anthony Johnson is there?
  5. What’s the case for optimism in UB’s defense?
  6. Lance Leipold looked to be on the hot seat after a 2-10 season, but now has a MAC East contender.  Can he turn the Bulls into a powerhouse like Wisconsin-whitewater?

Episode 52: Bowling Green season preview circa 2018

August 21, 2018

Bowling Green wasn't very good at many of the important aspects of football last year, which is not a good thing. Defense was atrocious, but it's the youth movement for Mike Jinks' team. The offense has some excitement to rally behind, but the defense? Different story.

Six questions we ask ourselves about BG in the year of 2018:

  1. Can Doege keep making noise, even against *this* schedule?
  2. Who the hell is going to catch Doege’s passes?
  3. The offense is pretty hype, the defense is obviously not very great. BG to the Big XII?
  4. Which player lost from the roster will be missed the most? (graduation or otherwise)
  5. Is there a level of badness yet to be reached by this defense, or have we seen the worst?
  6. Who steps up at punter after getting great seasons production from Brian Schmiedebusch and Joe Davidson in recent years?

Episode 51: Toledo season preview circa 2018

August 16, 2018

Toledo won the MAC last year! They finally did it! Now do it again. Realistically, this (intraleague) schedule should work in Toledo's favor and it's not like Toledo hasn't been recruiting very well over the years, either. So what if the quarterback situation is a big ole question mark? There should be enough skilled players scattered around to make things work on both sides of the ball again. Right?

Six questions we ask ourselves about Toledo in the year of 2018:

  1. Can Toledo’s running backs bail out Eli Peters/Mitch Guadagni if there’s bad QB play for a game?
  2. Candle said he’s open to letting both Peters & Guadagni. That means the starting job will be won during the VMI game, right?
  3. Is 2018 one of the really good years for Toledo’s defense or is 2018 one of the really bad years for Toledo’s defense?
  4. Is the Fresno State game the biggest one on UT’s schedule?
  5. What does Toledo’s season have to look like for it to be considered a disappointment?
  6. Who will lead the WR group in receptions? Yards? TDs?

Episode 50: Eastern Michigan season preview circa 2018

August 13, 2018

Eastern Michigan had a really rough season to wrap up Brogan Roback's career. It's not really his fault the team dropped six in a row while playing in nine one-possession games. The offense is going to have some new faces, but that defense is expected to dominate once again.

Six questions we ask ourselves about Eastern Michigan in the year of 2018:

  1. Why didn’t we think of “Dos Equis” as Maxx Crosby’s official nickname sooner?
  2. Which will be harder to overcome: replacing Brogan Roback or Sergio Bailey?
  3. EMU’s defense is definitely going to be top-2 in the MAC again, right?
  4. What’s the running game’s ceiling?
  5. Is anybody going to catch passes from the TE spot this year?
  6. EMU was 3-6 in one-possession games last season, with all six losses coming in consecutive weeks to pretty much eliminate the Eagles from bowl contention.  Does that improve this season?
