Episode 10: Chaos rises in the East and upsets in the West

October 16, 2017

At the time of this recording, Akron just beat Western Michigan 14-13. It was the fourth MAC game of the weekend that was decided by one possession and third game that was decided by one point.

So what's to be learned from all of this?

1. Don't put your football stadium at the bottom of a hill.

2. Bowling Green could win a six-way tie in the East.

Episode 9: Ground control to Major Drew

October 9, 2017

Drew Anderson is a damn baller. In seven overtimes, Buffalo put up 68 points and lost to Western Michigan (71) in the highest-scoring game in FBS history (139). In that game, Anderson, who is the backup quarterback at UB, threw for 597 yards to set a single-game passing record in the MAC. He also threw for seven TDs, 0 INTs and wasn't sacked at all.

Good thing we previewed this game in the last episode, right?

Don't worry, there was more stupidity to go around. Cody Thompson's hurt and out for the year, so that's a drag. Ohio, the MAC East favorite, lost to Central Michigan and Bowling Green got its first win of the season over Miami. I guess this means the new top dog in the East is... Akron? Wait, what?

Episode 8: The Canadian Quarterback Conference

October 5, 2017

Alex and Fitz are hanging out with you to preview the midway-point of the regular season (yeah, already!). Most of the games are washes, but keep your eyes peeled for the 3:30 p.m. slate.

We'll talk about how important the Western Michigan at Buffalo game is for both squads and why Buffalo's rush defense is going to be a key factor in this one.

Also, if the "September Heisman" was localized to the MAC, the winner is easily one of Cody Thompson or Logan Woodside. Or Darius Phillips. Anyways, somebody's bound to have a huge October. Nathan Rourke's a strong candidate here with the defenses he'll have to face.

WARNING: This is a longer podcast than we had hoped for. Please say nice things.

Episode 7: Uncle Al’s too busy being an uncle for this episode

October 2, 2017

Fitz and Justin talk about the defending champion Broncos and whether or not Buffalo can win the MAC East.

Oh, and Alex is an uncle!

Episode 6: Chaos looms in the Rust Belt

September 27, 2017

We're already ~a third of the way through the season, which means all the good stuff is about to unfold. When it does, it's going to slap all of us in the face with no regard for our emotional worth.

Fitz and Justin go through the Week 4 power rankings on Free on Saturday and they admit that Shane Morris is, objectively, good at quarterback. But how good is Northern Illinois? Is its offense that much of an anchor when the defense is so superb?

Week 5 is upon us, so they'll go through those games, what they expect as MAC play finishes preheating, and then they go off on some tangents about how they expect (demand!) chaos to happen in the West.

Lastly, is Toledo really that much better than everybody else?

Episode 5: Gots to pick it up on offense, boys

September 25, 2017

Plenty of slow starts to go around in the Mid-American Conference. Eastern Michigan waited until the fourth quarter to score a touchdown against Ohio. Western Michigan's offense hasn't been impressive, either.

How much optimism or pessimism do Buffalo and Ball State deserve for their 2-2 starts?

Episode 4: The Neu kids are getting some early playing time

September 18, 2017

The three biggest games of Week 3 were:

Northern Illinois beat Nebraska, Toledo won the shootout over Tulsa and Chuck Martin had his worst coaching moment(s) for Miami to lose to Cincinnati.

Non-conference play is winding down and we have a better grasp on these MAC teams than we did a few weeks ago. Alex and Justin talk about these things and some of the freshmen that are getting some quality minutes for Ball State on both sides of the ball.

Episode 3: It’s eventually SUNY in Buffalo

September 10, 2017

To overreact or not overreact? That is the question.

Or maybe the overreactions are completely logical and it's okay to do that. Is Ball State good? Can we accept Central Michigan being good? How about that Bufffalo defense?

We discuss these things, and Fitz apologizes for his drunken behavior at the Michigan State vs. Western Michigan game.

Episode 2: Fitz does not like Akron’s offense in a box, he does not like it with a fox

September 5, 2017

The duo of Alex and Fitz are back from watching most of the MAC lose its games over the weekend, as per usual with the non-conference portion of games.

Without trying to recap every little thing over the weekend (how much analysis could they give to Kent State's one passing yard or Akron's zero points, anyway?), Alex gives Fitz a series of four statements and Fitz has to respond by saying true or false to the following:

  1. TRUE OR FALSE: Buffalo will still be a losing team, but its defense will keep Buffalo within two-score games, for the most part.
  2. TRUE OR FALSE: Akron’s offense will be fine.
  3. TRUE OR FALSE: Ball State’s three-point loss at Illinois is just a mirage.
  4. TRUE OR FALSE: Central Michigan’s run game is a bigger concern than its pass game.

Episode 1: The boys are back in town; watchability rankings

August 31, 2017

Remember us?

Tuesday Night Lights is back and we're so stagnant it hurts. Alex and Fitz have revived the MAC-football sided podcast after a 13-month vacation. Alex got a new job. Fitz got a new appartment. Neither of them are with Hustle Belt anymore. Western Michigan got a new head coach. Eastern Michigan went to a bowl game. Donald Trump is actually the President of the United States. Things have certainly changed.

In the revival episode, Alex and Fitz talk about the watchability (or entertainment expectations) of the 12 MAC football teams. Something extremely vague, but it's the easiest way to quickly* preview the teams without getting to boring about it.

*-naturally, this episode lasted longer than we had planned on
